Maine Parentage Act (MPA)
The Maine Parentage Act (MPA) is a bill that comprehensively addresses issues involved in determining the legal parentage of a child. The bill was drafted by the Family Law Advisory Commission pursuant to a legislative Resolve directing the Commission to study family law in Maine and other states in this area and, if appropriate, report back with implementing legislation. The MPA is drawn from national model laws, such as the Uniform Parentage Act and the ABA Model Act Governing Assisted Reproductive Technology, as well as from laws adopted in a number of other jurisdictions, including, for example, New Hampshire, Delaware, the District of Columbia, New Mexico, Nevada, Utah and Washington. It become law effective July 2016.
